A typical dance class consists of a short warm-up followed by learning of the basic dance steps and dance step combinations (called korvai) as well as hand, eye and head gestures. As the beginners progress in acquiring the basics, short choreographies are studied. The more advanced dancers learn more complicated choreographies.
It is very important that a student first acquires all the basic dance steps. It can take time from the beginning of learning the dance steps till a free dancing and acquiring of dance choreography because the time is necessary for learning the correct foot, arm, hand, finger, eye and head movements.
As you proceed with learning bharatanatyam you will get a lot of interesting knowledge about the Indian cultural heritage. Most of dances are based on the Indian mythology.
Thus, the class covers hand-foot coordination, footwork, choreography, self-discipline and Indian culture through an artistic form of physical exercise.
In order to be able to dance the classical Indian dance you need strong legs and healthy calves as most of the movements are from the aramandi position which is a half-sitting position with the turned out thighs.
There is no age limit for starting dancing bharatanatyam. It can be practised by both male and female dancers. The wide range of movements and postures and the balanced mix of the rhythmic and mimetic aspects the dance lends itself well to experimental and blended choreography.
Bharatanatyam is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles in India. It can be danced as a solo dance and also in a group.
